Your hands made me and fashioned me;
Psalms 119:73a
What if I told you that struggling with your identity in Christ is normal? I used to think that I was the only person who struggled to know who I am in Christ. However, once I opened up about my struggle, I found out that I am not alone. There are a lot of us who have this struggle.
Psalms 119:73a has helped me deal with this issue. It tells me that Yahweh made me. How do I know this verse is referring to Yahweh? Look at verses seventy-four and seventy-five. Verse seventy-four uses the word ‘you’ just like verse seventy-three. Verse 7seventy-five tells us who ‘you’ is. It begins with these words “I know, O LORD…” The word LORD in Hebrew is Yahweh. Yahweh is the one from whom all things are created. The Jewish believers applied this thought to their very existence. Yahweh is the powerful being who gave them their forthcoming breath. He created all things and through Him, all things exist.
Verse seventy-three of Psalms 119 tells me that the one who created everything and who handles my existence made me and fashioned me. In Hebrew, the word ‘made’ carries the meaning of ‘bringing about a state.’ Yahweh brought about my existence. At the same time, He also gave me a particular form that distinguishes me from anyone else. He made me unique.
Whenever I struggle with my identity in Christ, I find that I am looking at myself from the viewpoint of the world. As I realize that my perspective is slanted, I also realize that it needs to be adjusted. I need to view myself from God’s viewpoint. When I do so I find that I am:
- Made by God, and God does not make worthless individuals.
- Unique and not made to be like anyone else on this earth.
- Special and precious to God because I am His child.
When I take time to realize these three things, my eyes refocus on my LORD and my joy is restored.
