Embracing God’s Righteousness

EMBRACING GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS

“O let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous; For the righteous God tries the hearts and minds. My shield is with God, Who saves the upright in heart.” Psalm 7:9-10

Life is a journey filled with moments of joy, challenges, and, if we’re honest with ourselves, moments when we fall short of God’s perfect standard. It’s easy to feel discouraged and question our own righteousness when we know that we sin every day. How can we possibly be considered righteous in God’s eyes when we stumble so often? In Psalm 7:9-10, we find words of encouragement and a deeper understanding of what it means to be righteous in the eyes of our loving God. The psalmist cries out for God to put an end to the evil of the wicked and to establish the righteous. But what does it mean to be righteous?

In the Hebrew language, the word “righteous” does not mean being sin-free, but rather it signifies a life that aligns with God’s just standard. As Christians, our standard is beautifully outlined in 1 John 1:9, which says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (NASB 1995 Update).” Embracing God’s righteousness begins with recognizing our need for His grace and forgiveness. We acknowledge our sins, confess them, and turn to God in repentance. It’s in this very act of confessing and seeking forgiveness that we start to understand the essence of righteousness.

God’s righteousness is not based on our ability to be sinless, for no one can achieve that perfection except Jesus Christ Himself. Instead, it is based on His unfailing love, His faithfulness to forgive, and His desire to make us righteous through His Son’s sacrifice on the cross. When we confess our sins and turn to God, our hearts and minds are tried and transformed by His righteousness. He examines our innermost being, and through the process of sanctification, He molds us into people who strive to live according to His just standard. Being righteous in God’s eyes doesn’t mean we never make mistakes or sin; it means allowing His grace to cover our shortcomings and trusting in His cleansing power. It means living with a heart that seeks after Him and yearns to align with His ways.

As we walk this journey of faith, we can hold on to the assurance that God is our shield. He protects us, guides us, and saves us, not because we are perfect, but because we are His children who continually seek His face. In His righteousness, we find hope, strength, and the courage to press on in our journey of faith, secure in the knowledge that we are His beloved children, continually growing in His likeness.
