Duck, Eggs

DUCK, EGGS

B.L. Glenn

I passed a farm with a sign posted out front: “Duck, eggs.”

I said, “That’s an unnecessary comma…”

Then it hit me.

I’ve never been hit by an egg. But I remember a time that I was hit out of nowhere by the love of God.

I had been in charge of a big project with my classmates at college. The project went off well, but I made a mess of the process and hurt a lot of people. It was a Saturday night, the night after our project was finished. Our campus was strangely empty. I was wandering around the grounds, depressed and listless. I was extra aware of my failings and how poorly I had led my team.

I wandered to the fields in front of the dorms, just a long stretch of grass and hill when it hit me. Or should I say, when He hit me? It was like I was ambushed by the love of God. I was strongly aware of His kindness, affection, and sweetness. I felt like I was drowning in an ocean of it. The yawning cavern of my failings became only shadows that accentuated His glory. I was suddenly swept up by this Being who knows my frame and remembers that I am dust. And yet, who loves me with an everlasting love.

I have never been more acutely aware of the Lord than I was that night. He doesn’t send moments like that very often, but when He does, watch out! He can sweep you off your feet before you know what’s coming.

Paul prayed for the Ephesians (Ephesians 3:14-19) that the eyes of their hearts would be enlightened and that they would be strengthened to comprehend the depth, width, and height of the love of God. He wanted them to know this love that surpasses knowledge. I find it fascinating Paul prays that God would give them strength to comprehend Christ’s love. It’s as though Paul knows that the love of God is too strong a thought, too overflowing, too deep and wide for our human hearts to grasp. He longs for the Church to understand this love on a deeper level.

I don’t know about you, but I feel love strongest when it is shown at a time that I least deserve it. What has your past week or month been like? Have you fallen short of your resolve, been short with your children, or are easily frustrated, or anxious about many things? Are you aware of your failings and feel too discouraged to look up to the Lord Jesus Christ?

Dear one! Go and be alone with Him. Remember: He did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all. Since God had given us His most valuable of valuables (His Son), how could we doubt that He will graciously give us all things? Hold up your failings to Him and wait for Him to respond. Then see what love He has lavished on you, that you should be called a child of God. That is what you are! Go and wait with Him a little while, and see if He will not come and meet you, strengthen you, and help you to better comprehend His great love!
